Joe Baker poster session

Date: Monday 2nd July 2018
Time: 18:30 – 20:30
Venue: Adelaide Convention Centre (ACC) – Foyer E

Conferences aren’t just about oral presentations and workshops, so be sure to come along to the poster session! This session gives an opportunity for presenters to display their research in a poster format, and to network and communicate with a more face-to-face audience. Judges will also be attending to assess posters and presenters throughout the evening. Make sure you grab yourself a sticker card at the start of the session. Each poster presenter you network with will give you a sticker for your card – completed sticker cards will go in a raffle for a Haigh’s chocolate prize (winner drawn at evening’s close)! Local food and drinks will be supplied. Posters will also be available to view throughout the conference.

Student Night

Date: Tuesday 3rd July 2018
Time: 18:30 – 21:00
Venue: The Elephant British Pub Function Room – 1 Cinema Pl, Adelaide SA 5000
(Free entry for registered students/invited mentors only)

The student night will take place at The Elephant British Pub, a traditional English pub with old-school décor and hearty food (7-minute drive or 20-minute walk from the ACC). This event gives you an opportunity not only network and socialise with student peers but also with other conference delegates in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Students will be given a token to invite a non-student delegate of their choice to the evening. This will encourage students to approach respected members of their field and allow them the chance to connect in a casual setting.  Food, music and drink specials will be available throughout the evening.  A $5 drink token will also be provided to all registered students and their invitees. For catering purposes, please bring your conference lanyard. The function room will open after 9 pm for all delegates to join if they wish.

Gala dinner

Date: Thursday 5th July 2018
Time: 18:30 – 24:00
Venue: Adelaide Convention Centre (ACC) – Panorama Room
Dress: Cocktail
(Included for full conference registrations – additional tickets for $150.00 can be purchased)

The Gala dinner will be the perfect way to end the AMSA “Canyons to Coast” conference, located in the beautiful ACC Panorama room overlooking the Torrens River. The dinner is an opportunity to thank everyone for their attendance to the conference, their support to AMSA and their contributions to marine research. Award winners and the location of the AMSA 2019 conference will also be announced. Dinner will feature a three-course, alternating menu of delicious, local SA food (dietary options catered for), with drinks and cash bar also available. Amazing Adelaide band “The Cast” will be providing entertainment throughout the night, especially classics and pop hits to get everyone moving on the dance floor later. The dinner will encourage attendees to network, celebrate and reflect with others in a more relaxed setting.

Coastal Conflicts

Date: Wednesday 4th July 2018
Time: 18:30 – 20:00
Venue: The Science Exchange – 55 Exchange Place, Adelaide SA 5000
Free, but bookings required

Dr Ashley Rowden, Principal Scientist NIWA
Prof Gretta Pecl, IMAS and Centre for Marine Socioecology
Prof Matthew England, Deputy Director UNSW Climate Change Research Centre

Bridging the gap between scientists and the general public is of upmost importance. RiAus (Australia’s Science Channel) are providing a public forum event focussed on the topic of “Coastal Conflicts” for both scientists and non-scientists alike. The event will allow our guest scientists to discuss big issues in the marine environment, and an opportunity for a Q&A session with the audience. Event is free but registrations essential. Cash bar available.

“Join us as host author and broadcaster Michael Vietch asks some of our leading scientific minds how we deal with issues like oil and gas exploration, species migration and climate change. With featured guests: Dr Ashley Rowden (Principal Scientist NIWA), Prof Gretta Pecl (IMAS & Centre for Marine Socioecology) and Prof Matthew England (Deputy Director UNSW Climate Change Research).

The economic value of the world’s oceans, the ‘Blue Economy’ is in the realm of $US 3-5 trillion.  In Australia, this is expected to grow faster than our GDP, and is projected to contribute around $100 billion a year by 2025. There is an urgent need to understand the interconnected realms of geology, oceanography and biodiversity, and how threats like climate change will affect our oceans.  Our oceans are increasingly under stress, and the challenge now is how do we strike the balance between economic and social benefits and ecosystem sustainability?”
